This is a 12" x 18" open edition photographic print of my limited edition artwork "The Portal", which is
a black‑and‑white abstract study of a helical staircase, viewed from its centre and rising toward a circular walk‑on glass rooflight. The upward perspective transforms the structure into a sculptural form, drawing the viewer toward the luminous opening above — "The Portal".
I explored several compositions, but the central, head‑on perspective offered the strongest sense of symmetry. In this orientation, the structure begins to slip toward abstraction, with the shadows creating a natural separation between elements. Any shift off‑centre caused those forms to intersect and lose clarity.
Ultimately, positioning the stair to rise from the bottom of the frame created a subtle directional pull, guiding the viewer toward the subject.
The geometry, composition, and cleanliness of the image generated an almost sci-fi feel about it, thus inspiring the title. .
